Mr. Ballien grew up in St. Charles (MI) and has been teaching in Walkerville for three years.
“I had a teacher who I’ll never forget,” he said. ” His name was Mr. Brownie and he was very kind, took the time to know every student, and encouraged you to do your best.”
“Along with my parents who were also educators, Mr. Brownie was a great role model for me,” Mr. Ballien said. “I grew up always knowing the joy of working with kids.”
If Mr. Ballien had another career, he’d probably be an architect.
As it is, he is able to exercise his passion for building by taking on handyman projects during the summer. (When he’s not traveling all over the state playing softball, that is!)
But building with wood is not as rewarding as helping to shape lives, he notes.
“It’s an honor to be a guide in the learning journey of my students,” he said. “And we have lots of fun together as well. They are so energetic – and each one has a unique personality. There’s so much to like about our 6th grade class!”
