This is Mr. Hershey’s first year with Walkerville Schools. He grew up in the Muskegon area and graduated from Reeths-Puffer Schools.

“When I was in middle school, my gym teacher was my favorite,” he said. “He consistently made the class both fun and worthwhile – and in fact, he was my inspiration to go into teaching.”

Mr. Hershey has taught in a large school district before and see Walkerville’s small size as a big advantage. “You get to know each one of your students far better, and that lifts up your teaching considerably,” he said.

While becoming a professional athlete of some kind was a childhood dream, Mr. Hershey believes it’d be hard to top his current role.

“When you’re the only PE teacher for all grades – kindergarten through 12th grade – you’re challenged to meet a wide variety of developmental stages and abilities,” he points out. “I like that. It’s never boring, that’s for sure!”

Both of Mr. Hershey’s parents were educators and education and good health were held in high regard in his family. “I was always encouraged to stay active, whether it was running, golfing, hockey, or softball… so I’m grateful I’m now able encourage young people in the same way.”

To go along with staying active and fit, if you want to make Mr. Hershey happy by playing one of his favorite songs, it’s easy. Just choose anything by Aerosmith!
